On Wednesday, the Trump administration revealed a collaboration between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), aimed at exploring the underlying causes of autism spectrum disorder.
A press release explained that this partnership will provide opportunities to analyze billing data, electronic medical records, and consumer wearables.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced intentions to embark on a “large scale testing and research initiative” focusing on autism causation.
“We are utilizing this collaboration to pinpoint the root causes of autism and other chronic health conditions,” Kennedy stated on Wednesday. “We’ve made our processes transparent and accountable, yet our families have been kept in the dark for too long.”
However, Kennedy’s statements regarding autism have drawn criticism from various stakeholders, who view them as “incredibly misleading” and “harmful.” Although the precise origins of autism remain unclear, many studies suggest a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors may play a role.
The HHS head has consistently supported claims that vaccines are linked to autism, despite the CDC’s strong refutation of any connection between vaccines and autism risks.
The research support will stem from CMS’s data disclosure initiative, focusing on autism diagnosis trends, health outcomes following certain treatments, disparities in access to care, and the economic impact on affected families and healthcare systems.
A study published last year by Drexel University indicated that in 2016, there were 846,350 Medicaid beneficiaries diagnosed with autism.
