RFK Jr. Proposes Expanding Access to Alternative Treatments
During the Trump presidency, there might be a surge in dubious medical practices. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has recently announced his plans to increase access to experimental and alternative medical treatments. While he recognizes that many “charlatans” could exploit vulnerable individuals, he seems undeterred.
Kennedy made this statement during an interview on the Ultimate Human Podcast, hosted by Gary Brecka. Brecka claims to be a biologist and biohacker, although he doesn’t hold a medical license. Kennedy mentioned that as Secretary of Health and Human Services, he would make it easier for Americans to access treatments that aren’t yet sanctioned by health authorities.
“If you want to take an experimental drug—you can do that, you ought to be able to do that,” Kennedy explained to Brecka.
Some patient advocates have urged for more relaxed regulations around experimental treatments, but many experts caution that there needs to be a careful balance between improving access and ensuring safety. It’s not clear that Kennedy’s approach will achieve this balance.
In the past, Kennedy has disseminated misinformation about vaccines—widely regarded as one of the most effective medical advancements—alongside various other health-related topics. His advocacy for alternative treatments, lacking solid scientific backing, is also noteworthy. During the podcast, he cited chelation therapy and stem cell treatments as examples of therapies that should be more accessible.
Stem cell research is a legitimate and expanding field; however, many direct-to-consumer clinics exaggerate the effectiveness of these treatments. Some claim they can address a variety of serious conditions, including cancer and long COVID. Unfortunately, numerous patients have reported severe complications, such as infections and even blindness, after seeking these services.
The situation is even more precarious with chelation therapy. While it can be effective for certain types of heavy metal poisoning, it’s often misused in alternative health circles. It’s claimed to “cleanse” individuals of supposed toxins related to chronic illnesses, including autism. This has also led to severe injuries and fatalities when used improperly.
Kennedy seems aware of the risks but lightly brushes them off, understanding that bad results are a possibility. He stated, “And of course you’re going to get a lot of charlatans, and you’re going to get people who have bad results. And ultimately, you can’t prevent that either way. Leaving the whole thing in the hands of pharma is not working for us.”
The FDA has warned people to avoid unregulated treatments like chelation therapy for autism and stem cell therapies. Still, with Kennedy and the Trump administration historically undermining sanctioned medical treatments—including vaccines—there’s a concern that the floodgates might open for unlicensed drugs that could be ineffective or harmful to desperate individuals.
