Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to nominate California lawyer and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan as his running mate, according to reports.
Mr. Shanahan, a Democratic donor who was once married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, funded Mr. Kennedy’s expensive Super Bowl campaign commercial. Media reported on Saturday.
She said the two “agreed on many issues,” including Kennedy’s condemnation of vaccines, and that she could help funnel money to Kennedy’s long-term goals and get him on the ballot in all 50 states. A source close to the campaign told the magazine.
Notably, this nomination removes New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who President Kennedy has said he is considering for vice president, from the November ballot.
The newspaper has reached out to Kennedy’s campaign for comment.
Kennedy initially ran as a Democrat against President Biden, but announced his independent candidacy in October. He is the top third-party candidate in the field, consistently leading by double digits over President Biden and former President Donald Trump.
The Kennedy campaign announced Wednesday that it will announce its running mate on March 26 in Oakland, California.
Kennedy’s short list of candidates also included former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, who along with Rogers was “at the top of the list,” Kennedy told The New York Times this week.
Kennedy is working as an independent to secure funding to get on the ballot in each state, which his campaign claims will cost $15 million. So far, he is eligible to vote in only four states: Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire and Utah.
