Rhett Walker Supports Gospel-Focused Artists After Tait's Alleged Misdeeds

Rhett Walker Addresses Criticism of Christian Music Industry

Rhett Walker, a Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) artist, recently expressed his frustration regarding the backlash against Christian music following the allegations involving former Newsboys singer Michael Tait.

“My calling is my job,” he stated. “So I have to pay the bill, and this is how I do it. I hope your calling is also your job. If plumbers face similar accusations, and they are true, they go to prison. But I wouldn’t cancel the plumbing industry.”

Walker emphasized that there are many people in the CCM scene who genuinely aim to spread the gospel through their music, mentioning, “There are folks like me who care about sharing the message.” He has connections with various artists, radio hosts, and promoters who share that goal.

He clarified that fame is not something that drives him. “I am a follower, a husband, and a father,” he mentioned. “Being famous doesn’t matter to me.” Still, he rejected the notion that the Christian music industry is solely about financial gain.

In response to criticism from a follower on Instagram who suggested that the entire CCM community needed a “purge,” Walker shared his perspective, commenting on how unfortunate it is that excessive drinking is often overlooked in the industry. “If other band members are aware of these issues but remain silent, that’s frustrating,” he noted.

“People in the industry and the label should be scrutinized,” he added. “If this is allowed, what else might be tolerated?”

Walker suggested that Tait’s actions shouldn’t tarnish the reputation of the entire CCM community. He believes it’s crucial to confront issues honestly. “Let’s call things as they are and move forward,” he urged. “The problem arises when all artists share the same platform despite some having problematic behavior.”

Walker’s comments surfaced amid serious accusations against Tait, which include drug use, alcohol issues, and sexual assault. Tait has acknowledged some of the claims, describing them as “almost true.” Following these events, he left the Newsboys to seek medical help, after reportedly witnessing a traumatic incident during a 2014 tour.

As a result of the scandal, Capitol Christian Music dropped the Newsboys from its roster, and K-Love removed their songs from rotation. Various artists, including Paramore’s Hayley Williams, have spoken out about the situation, expressing hope for a collapse of the CCM industry while criticizing it for lacking support for individuals like Tait.

Additionally, singer-songwriter Cory Asbury mentioned on Instagram the widespread awareness of issues within the industry, suggesting that many artists live double lives similar to what has been revealed about Tait.

Christian apologist Mike Winger weighed in, suggesting that Tait may have escaped scrutiny for so long due to a culture where many in the industry feel threatened by one another. “It’s likely that others in the industry are similarly avoiding accountability,” he stated.
