Rice Cornerback Ejected from Game Against UTSA
During Saturday’s game, Rice Owls cornerback Callie Crump was ejected as the team faced off against the UTSA Roadrunners. Crump, along with some teammates, was involved in a scuffle after attempting to stop the defense. In a heated moment, he was seen pushing an official away while they tried to intervene, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the game.
After the incident, Crump, who previously transferred to Houston, took to social media to express remorse. He wrote, “I am sorry to have disappointed the people of Rice. All I ask is for you all to open your arms and give me another chance. My actions in this game were unacceptable, but they were not malicious, and when I swung at Pyle, I was trying to get the ball out. I didn’t realize it was grabbed by the referee until it was over.”
Before his ejection, Crump recorded two tackles in the game. He joined Rice University as a graduate transfer, having originally started his collegiate career at the University of Arizona. After stints at Michigan State University and Houston Christian University, he has made a notable impact this season with a total of 14 tackles and six pass breakups.
This game wasn’t a good one for Rice, as they were decisively defeated by UTSA with a score of 61-13. Roadrunners quarterback Owen McCown shone in the first half, throwing three touchdown passes. He finished the game with 236 passing yards on 15 completions out of 21 attempts. Running back Will Henderson III also had an impressive performance with 115 rushing yards over just five carries and two touchdowns. On the other hand, Rice’s rushing efforts were led by Darren Alexander, who accumulated 129 rushing yards along with a touchdown.
With this loss, UTSA improved to a 3-3 record for the season, while Rice now stands at 3 wins and 4 losses.
