Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist known for his books on atheism and evolution, has praised Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling for challenging Scotland’s new hate speech laws.

Dawkins said modern society has mysterious mechanisms for how public opinion on particular issues and ideologies changes, from court decisions to everyday conversations.
Dawkins said that “people sometimes say things that seem to be up in the air,” but that “gossip and dinner party conversations and newspapers and journalism and judges and courts and all these kinds of things… It comes down to a kind of combination.” Things are contributing to a change in opinion, and I’m just looking forward to seeing the current climate of opinion change. ”
