Richard Pryor's wife shares that he threatened her during episodes of drug-induced madness

Jennifer Pryor Talks About Troubling Incidents with Richard Pryor

In a recent podcast appearance, Jennifer Pryor, widow of the legendary comedian Richard Pryor, opened up about a terrifying episode from their past. She revealed that during a time when he was battling drug-induced psychosis, Richard allegedly threatened her life.

This conversation took place on Howie Mandel’s podcast, where Jennifer recounted how the troubling situation started. She explained that it all began when she had to inform Richard about reshooting a scene for the 1980 film *Star Crazy*. Apparently, he was in a fragile state of mind. “He had basically lost his mind,” she shared, indicating she felt endangered during that moment.

When Mandel pressed her on whether she had ever felt unsafe around Richard, she replied honestly, stating, “Yes, he threatened my life.” She recalled a specific moment when he said, “I’m going to kill you.” It’s alarming to think of such words coming from someone she loved.

Jennifer described a tense situation where she woke up to find a pile of cocaine on her desk. She felt the need to leave immediately but was met with Richard’s insistence that she stay. “The sun is coming up now,” he said, adding ominously, “You are going to die.”

Despite the chaos, Jennifer attempted to calm him down. “I said, ‘Everything’s going to be OK. There’s no need for violence here,'” she recounted earnestly. During one particularly intense moment, he allegedly had his hand on her neck, but she managed to soothe him temporarily. Eventually, she put on her slacks and made a quick exit.

As the conversation continued, Mandel pointed out how it seemed Jennifer often returned to Richard, to which she admitted was true. Their relationship was complicated and had its ups and downs, reflective of the tumultuous lives they led.

Richard Pryor remains an iconic figure in comedy, with numerous accolades including five Grammy Awards and an Emmy. His film credits include *Silver Streak* and *See No Evil, Hear No Evil*. Interestingly, he and Jennifer were first married in 1981 but separated just 14 days later. A secret remarriage occurred in 2001, and they stayed together until his passing in 2005.

In addition to the past threats, Jennifer recounted another disturbing incident. She mentioned the time Richard fired a gun in their home—a .357 Magnum. She was outside at the time and remembers him shooting toward the walls. It left her shaken but somehow she found the strength to cope.

Reflecting on these experiences, Jennifer expressed that surviving such turmoil makes her feel fortunate to be here today. Her story serves as a reminder of the complexities within relationships, especially those impacted by addiction and mental health challenges.
