Richie Romero Enters Culinary Scene with New Eateries

Richie Romero, a seasoned figure in nightlife, is moving on from the tumultuous club scene to open three new restaurants. He shared in an interview that this shift allows him to leave behind the “dark energy” of a lifestyle filled with excess.

This development follows the recent arrest of his former partner, Richie Akiva, on assault allegations, which sent shockwaves through the club scene once ruled by them, particularly at venues like 1OAK and Up & Down.

Romero acknowledged that the environment surrounding him—marked by “drugs, alcohol, and infidelity”—became overwhelming. He clarified that while he’s experienced the chaos, he personally abstained from drugs and limited his alcohol intake over the past two decades.

“I didn’t want to be part of that anymore. Being around people who seemed lost was just not appealing,” he mentioned.

After marrying in 2022, he found it easier to step back from the nightlife grind.

Meanwhile, accusations against Akiva involve a violent incident last month; Akiva has denied these claims. Romero, who ended his partnership with Akiva in 2020, insisted that their relationship remained positive and that his exit from the nightlife scene was gradual.

Romero expressed the emotional toll of constant demands and drama from partnerships, noting, “Every time the phone rang, I cringed. There was always someone needing something.”

He reflected on how sometimes, those he helped achieve success developed feelings of jealousy toward him.

Currently, he’s launching a unique Wagyu room at the Nomad Hotel and an upscale cocktail lounge called The Eighth, along with a new Sushi by Bou location in the East Village.

The Wagyu Room, which opens this Saturday, features a meat-centric omakase experience. Partnering with Palm Beach Meats, patrons can enjoy a 10-course meal for $150 in an intimate setting.

“I see a niche market for meat-lovers who don’t prefer fish,” he said, reflecting on the concept of omakase.

Another venture, The Eighth, is set to open on February 20th. The idea here is intriguingly themed as the “eighth night of the week,” and will host unique cocktail ceremonies throughout the evening.

This new eatery will feature 40 seats, complemented by a bar designed like an altar. Chef Kat Williams will craft small plates reflecting an eclectic menu, with highlights like jerk wings and scallop dishes.

The design is noted for its creativity, showcasing a VIP section and energetic aesthetic elements like disco balls and light mirrors.

Romero’s growing portfolio also includes plans to open even more Sushi by Bou locations nationally. He described a unique dining theme at each venue, infused with pop culture references.

In the culinary world, the excitement doesn’t stop there. Mark Barak, founder of La Pecora Bianca Group, is set to launch an Italian restaurant named Juretta in the MetLife Building. This new space will range from morning espresso to homemade pasta and Neapolitan pizza.

Additionally, Willet’s Corner has opened on Amsterdam Avenue, featuring a Mediterranean-inspired menu curated by former Harding’s executive chef, offering an array of dishes like roasted cauliflower and various salads.
