Rick Caruso Reconsiders Political Bid Amid New Allegations Against Karen Bass
Businessman Rick Caruso announced last month that he would not run for office again after losing to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. However, recent allegations suggesting that Bass requested a less critical report concerning the Palisades fire have led Caruso to reconsider his stance.
In a post on X, Caruso took to criticizing the mayor after reading a report in the Los Angeles Times. He expressed his outrage at what he called the suppression of vital information regarding a significant disaster in Los Angeles, stating, “When it comes to life safety issues, this is no longer a matter of making a bad decision, apologizing, and moving on.”
He further elaborated that this situation has resulted in a total loss of public trust and a deliberate attempt to cover up actions that may have led to casualties. “Everyone should read this article and consider what actions are justified,” Caruso added, deeming the mayor’s actions a failure.
Previously, Caruso had stated he would “not pursue elective office at this time,” but during an interview with KTTV recently, he hinted at possibly changing his mind based on the latest report.
When asked if the report influenced his decision, Caruso responded, “Yes, it is, because incompetence and incompetence are two different things. But mixing incompetence is quite different.” He indicated that he believes there is a significant issue with honesty in public service.
Sources connected to the mayoral office informed the Times about Bass’s involvement in altering the fire report. The newspaper mentioned uncertain communications from two of its sources regarding what they were told about the mayor’s actions.
In response, Bass’s office dismissed the accusations. They asserted that the mayor had only asked the Los Angeles Fire Department to verify the early draft for accuracy concerning issues like weather and budget and did not alter its contents.
“The Mayor has made clear his concerns regarding the LAFD’s response to the fire,” the statement continued, emphasizing that there was no reason for her to request any changes to the report. Bass’s office condemned the Times report as misleading, describing it as a serious misstep in journalism that relies on unverified and third-party information.
