Actor Rick Hurst Passes Away at 79
Rick Hurst, best known for his role as Deputy Cretus Hogg in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died at the age of 79. The news of his passing was shared by his co-star Ben Jones, who portrayed Cooter Davenport in the beloved series, confirming that Hurst passed on Thursday afternoon.
“Rick was a fantastic guy,” Jones reflected in his statement. “Our show has enjoyed success for nearly 40 years, and Rick was a big part of that journey. It really stunned and hurt to hear that he was gone. He was with us just last week, and this was so unexpected.”
Jones went on to praise Hurst, saying, “He was genuine… heartfelt… generous. He was the kind of friend you wanted to keep by your side. His mission was to bring joy to people’s lives. He was an exceptional comedian and a comic actor.”
The cause of death has not been specified.
Jones described the shock felt by fans and friends alike, noting, “It’s just hard to process such unexpected news. It feels wrong that Rick isn’t here anymore. I’ve known him for over 45 years, and he always left me with a laugh. He was a true professional, but his heart was enormous, like Texas.” There’s a real bittersweetness to these words, reflecting the deep bond they shared.
In a touching tribute, Jones remarked, “We always called Cooter’s friends ‘hazardination.’ Hazard Nation will certainly miss Rick, but his spirit remains with us.” Hurst’s death comes just before a scheduled fan event in Tennessee, which makes the news all the more poignant and shocking.
Many tributes have been pouring in since his passing, including comments from John Schneider, another co-star from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Schneider shared his feelings on social media, saying, “I’ve just learned of my dear friend Rick Hurst’s passing, also known as Cretus Hogg. His incredible influence is felt in laughter and sanity. Heaven has gained a wonderful person.” It’s moments like these that remind us of the impact someone can have on those around them.
Hurst had a lengthy career, portraying Deputy Cretus Hogg in the late 1970s and sustaining his role throughout the 1980s. He also starred in several other shows such as “Sanford and Son,” “M*A*S*H,” and “Gunsmoke,” demonstrating his versatility as an actor.
He leaves behind two sons, Ryan and Colin. Ryan, born in June 1976, is from his first marriage, and Colin was born after Hurst’s second marriage to Katherine Shelley Weir. In an interesting twist, both sons have followed in their father’s footsteps in the entertainment industry, with Ryan even appearing in the updated versions of “Dukes of Hazzard.” There’s something comforting about the legacy that continues through family.
