The NCAA Tournament bubble didn’t burst at St. John’s University on Sunday, as it turns out it never actually existed.
Not only was St. John’s removed from the 68-team list, but despite a strong second half of the season that included six straight wins and a defensive push, St. John’s was not among the first four teams eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. revealed that. National champion UConn was pushed to the limit in the Big East tournament semifinals.
“If I could hug my players and ease their pain, I would wave a magic wand and do it,” head coach Rick Pitino said on Zoom after the team watched the selection show behind closed doors. Ta. It’s coming. “But unfortunately I couldn’t do that.”
A weekend of automatic bids across the country knocked St. John’s University (20-13, 11-9) out of the bubble for good. This was surprising considering his NET ranking (NCAA evaluation tool) ranked him 32nd.
Since the introduction of perhaps the most important metric, the team with the highest NET ranking to miss the tournament was North Carolina State (No. 33) in 2019…until now.
“I think perhaps we should all never say that word.” [NET] Because it’s a scam,” Pitino said. “I don’t think it’s necessary to mention NET anymore.I think it was pretty strong in terms of schedule.” [in] Kenpom [rankings]. Why mention him? We ran a tight schedule and tried to do things the right way, but it didn’t work out. But I never make excuses. ”
The remaining four teams are Virginia, Colorado, Boise State and Colorado State, with two of the play-in matchups set up earlier in the week in Dayton, Ohio, for the No. 10 seed.
The first four teams to lose were Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Indiana State, and Pittsburgh.
St. John’s was looking for a strong winning streak to win its first Big Dance championship since 2000 and aim to make its first tournament appearance since 2019.
Pitino was trying to become the first coach to take six different schools to the NCAA Tournament.
“There’s no consolation if you’re in the top four or in the top four. The only thing is to survive,” Pitino said. “The players were all fired up and very excited, but as each round went on, the room became more and more somber.”
St. John’s will decline its bid to the NIT, end the season and shift its focus to the transfer portal, as coach Pitino has said he needs to bring in “seven or eight” new players.
The frenzy started early, with the top seeds winning just 11 of the 32 conference tournaments.
North Carolina State (ACC), Oregon (Pac-12), Duquesne (Atlantic 10) and UAB (American Athletic Conference) unexpectedly crashed the party by winning their conference tournaments, and Richard Pitino… New Mexico State, coached by Junior, came out of the bubble with a win. Mountain West.

“Every upset that could happen happened and all three of us were really hurt by it,” Pitino said. “I have to say the committee did their best. We were not considered… and we move on.”
On Friday, St. John’s appeared to have earned a berth with a blowout win over Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, avenging a two-game loss in the regular season.
Instead, the result also removed the Pirates from the bracket, leaving just three teams in the Big East as Providence joined St. John’s and Seton Hall in disappointment.
Pitino said he knew St. John’s “was going to be very difficult to get through” after losses to Colorado, Florida Atlantic and North Carolina in the tournament. This is the first time in his long coaching career that he has experienced a bubble burst – if there was one at all.
“We’re not going to complain, we’re not going to say we failed,” Pitino said. “Bitterness doesn’t help. I’ve had enough bitter experiences in my life to last a lifetime.”
