Former Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton Dies at 46
A former champion in the light welterweight and welterweight boxing categories, Ricky Hatton, has died at the age of 46.
Reports from the Press Association indicate that Hatton was discovered deceased at his home in Manchester. Authorities have stated that there’s no suspicion surrounding the circumstances of his passing.
According to Greater Manchester Police, they responded to a call from a member of the public who reported finding a body at 6:45 AM today. The police emphasized, “We don’t think there is a suspicious situation right now.”
While the identity of the deceased hasn’t been officially disclosed yet, law enforcement is coordinating with the family to provide a statement. However, the boxing community has begun to express their condolences on social media.
Boxer Amir Khan shared a heartfelt message, saying, “Today, we lost not only one of the biggest boxers in the UK, but our friend, leader, warrior, Ricky Hatton.”
Tyson Fury also paid tribute, posting a picture alongside Hatton on Instagram, writing, “The legendary Ricky Hatton… I can’t believe this. He was so young.”
Hatton had been planning a return to boxing with a match scheduled in Dubai for December. Throughout his illustrious career, he collected multiple world titles and was named Fighter of the Year in 2005 by the American Association of Boxing Writers as well as ESPN. His record stands at 45 wins and 3 losses, featuring 32 knockouts. His last professional fight took place in November 2012, where he lost by knockout to Vyacheslav Senchenko in Manchester.
Frank Warren, Hatton’s former manager, reflected on his legacy, describing him as an incredibly talented fighter who inspired many young boxers and fans alike. It’s a significant loss for the sport and those who admired him.
This shocking news leaves many feeling not just mournful, but also contemplative about the impact Hatton had both inside the ring and out. My thoughts go out to his family during this challenging time.
