Tributes Pour in for Ricky Hatton, Former Boxing Champion
Manchester, England — Ricky Hatton, the beloved former world boxing champion, has sadly passed away at the age of 46. Reports indicate he was found deceased at his residence in Greater Manchester.
According to the British Press Association, police are not treating his death as suspicious. They received a call from a member of the public this morning at 6:45 AM, leading them to discover the body of the 46-year-old.
The Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying, “We don’t think there is a suspicious situation right now.” While the police have not disclosed Hatton’s identity, they mentioned they are collaborating with his family to issue a statement to the press.
Friends and fellow boxers were quick to share their condolences. Tyson Fury expressed his grief on Instagram alongside a picture of the two, stating, “There’s only one Ricky Hatton. I can’t believe this is so young.”
Hatton’s untimely death comes just two months after he announced a comeback, planning to return to the ring in December for a professional match against Aysa Al Da in Dubai.
Throughout his career, Hatton captured world titles in both light welterweight and welterweight divisions. He consistently faced top-tier opponents, including legends like Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
Known for his honest approach to mental health, Hatton opened up to fans about the struggles he faced after retiring from boxing. He once remarked that while fighters are often seen as tough, the hardest battles happen in silence.
After retirement, Hatton transitioned to coaching, notably training Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a world bantamweight title victory in 2017.
