The Carolina Panthers and Rico Dowdle Shine Against the Dolphins
The Carolina Panthers had a standout performance over the weekend, led by running back Rico Dowdle, who delivered one of the best games of his career by surprising the Miami Dolphins.
Dowdle accumulated 206 rushing yards on 23 carries, crossing the end zone for a touchdown. Additionally, he caught three passes for 28 yards. The Panthers improved to a 2-3 record, gaining some momentum ahead of their upcoming matchup with the Cowboys.
Reflecting on his time with the Cowboys, Dowdle mentioned, “They were buckled.” He seemed to hint that the Cowboys are aware of his potential: “I think they certainly know. They didn’t leave me there for five years without a reason.”
On the other side, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged Dowdle’s progress ahead of their game. He commented, “I’m happy to see Rico this weekend. We know we have to buckle up; he said it—bring our seat belts, Rico.” It seems there’s a sense of anticipation for their meeting.
Dowdle, who joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020, faced challenges early on in his career. He had limited opportunities in his first season and missed the entire 2021 season due to a hip injury. However, he found his footing in 2022, primarily contributing on special teams behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Last season, Dowdle really made a mark, rushing for 1,079 yards over 235 carries, scoring two touchdowns in the process.
This year, looking to share the duties with Chuba Hubbard, Dowdle stepped up when Hubbard faced injuries, demonstrating his capability and determination on the field.
