James Madison, author of the Second Amendment, argued that Americans should own guns to protect themselves against the excesses of power.
In Federalist No. 46, Madison wrote that Americans are exceptional precisely because they are armed, and he noted that an armed people and the “existence of a government to which the people are subordinate” provide the framework within which the people can band together to defend their lives and liberties. The people band together as a “militia,” with officers “appointed” by local “subordinate governments.” And it only makes sense for the people to band together because they are armed.
Madison emphasized:
Let us suppose, though this supposition be far-fetched, that if a regular army were organized, fully equal in resources to the nation, and administered with the full support of the Federal Government, it would not be too much to say that the State governments, with the support of their citizens, could repel the danger.
