The Tennessee Senate has reportedly already voted on an earlier version of the bill and plans to vote on a new version soon before sending it to Governor Lee’s desk for signature.
Democrats attacked the anti-grooming law during a House hearing Monday.
“These are some of the most vulnerable people in our state, and they are just making it through middle school alive,” said Tennessee State Representative Aftin Behn (D). “And we are weaponizing their identity instead of actually passing legislation that will help Tennesseans.”
The bill’s sponsor, Tennessee Representative Mary Littleton (R), explained that the bill was needed to allow parents to know whether their children needed treatment. The comment was reportedly heard as a gasp.
“I feel like parents, they have a right to know what’s going on with their kids at school,” Littleton said. “And I also think that maybe the child can get some therapy that will help him resolve his issues and allow him to attend school.”
The bill, which passed the Tennessee House of Representatives on Monday, would require school officials to inform administrators that a student has requested to be referred to as the opposite sex, and administrators would be required to relay that information to parents. has been done.
The bill would also allow parents and the Tennessee Attorney General to sue if they feel a school district is not complying with the law.
These aren’t the only anti-grooming laws Tennessee is pushing to protect children.
