Eating is not a crime
It’s surprising, really, that Pei Chong, often dubbed the “Dinner and Dash diva,” is locked up on Rikers Island for, essentially, not paying for dinners. Her offenses are all non-violent, which makes it hard to understand why she’s there when I’ve read about violent offenders still roaming the streets. I mean, what’s the deal with this city? It’s tough to figure out who poses a real threat. Perhaps it’s time to free Mr. Chong to make space for those truly deserving of incarceration.

Renters in crisis
Your article discussing New York City’s rental situation points out that the rent freeze “further discourages rent-stabilized tenants from moving and…makes it harder for newly arriving New Yorkers to find housing.” So, the suggestion is that rent-stabilized tenants should just move, right? But where exactly would they go? It seems like the underlying message is that someone else can take their place, which reflects a rather greedy mindset typical of the hotel industry, not one concerned with housing.

Please step aside, Powell
I believe Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell should step down for the country’s benefit and let Kevin Warsh take over, especially to lower interest rates (Don’s Fed pick jest, February 2). President Trump seems eager to own the economic narrative, and perhaps it would be better if Powell just took a backseat and handed the reins to Trump, for better or worse.

Protect the blue
Kudos to the Post for covering the tragic death of Officer Pradeep Tamang in an unprovoked attack in Georgia (“Police Killed at Georgia Hotel” February 3). Stories like this highlight the importance of standing by our police officers.

I want ICE released
Corey DeAngelis has shown a callous disregard for the teachers and students he claims to support (“Teachers and Democrats’ ‘Union’” Post Opinion, February 4). Educators in Minneapolis are trying to protect their students, who are rightfully terrified of the actions taken by the Department of Homeland Security.
Cases like 5-year-old Liam Ramos, nurse Alex Preti, and mother Renee Good are just the tip of the iceberg. The use of tear gas and flashbangs isn’t isolated; this is happening regularly. The public has seen it on TV and social media.
Our desire to see ICE removed from Minnesota stems from its misuse of power. We’re working to shield young people from abuse, and it’s nearly impossible for them to focus on their studies when they live in fear of losing their parents.
If Corey genuinely cared about the children’s futures, he would help us limit ICE’s influence so teachers can refocus on education instead of helping kids navigate the trauma and chaos ICE brings into their lives.

Taiwan’s dilemma
The United States ought to support Taiwan in accepting China, uniting under a “one country, two systems” framework similar to Hong Kong (“Diplomatic phone call between Mr. Dong and Xi Jinping”, February 5). It’s puzzling that a small island, which many around the globe recognize as part of China, causes such significant tension.
