After President Donald Trump signed an order banning transgender athletes from school sports, the NCAA allegedly rewritten the rules to comply with the federal order. But now, women's sports advocate Riley Gaines says that the league changes actually don't adhere to the president's orders at all, allowing trans athletes to play in women's sports.
Trump signed his order on February 5th to protect women's sports from men who claim to be trans women.
The next day, the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) claimed it had set up a new policy to follow the new federal Title IX rules that allowed trans athletes to play as women.
But former NCAA swimming champion Gaines becomes a female sports activist and says the new NCAA rules are fake.
“This policy is almost as clear as mud, and very much allows men to compete in a female team and receive the benefits of women,” Gaines said. I saidaccording to National News Desk.
Gaines went on to tell Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that he agrees that the NCAA policy has too many meaningful “loop holes.”
“We've all been pretty quick to celebrate this new policy with the NCAA, but it's important that Americans know that this policy is garbage,” Gaines added. “We're looking. We want to see what they're doing and hold them accountable.”
Critics of the NCAA changes argue that the new policies are based on birth certificates or physician certifications. This, they say, doesn't follow the Trump administration's definition of sex as “unchanging” and binary.
However, the NCAA has challenged readings on the rules, saying that “student athletes assigned at birth” will not allow them to play as women. The organization also argues that the rules do not allow men to “play on a female team with an amended birth certificate or other forms of ID.”
