Riley Gaines swims to shore from Alcatraz with ‘most impressive Navy Seals’

Perhaps the Anglin brothers could use some advice from Riley Gaines.. (Or maybe not? We’ll never know.)

Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer who has since fought for fairness in women’s sports, posted to X on Friday that she had “successfully swam Alcatraz.”

The infamous prison-turned-museum is located on San Francisco Bay and requires a 1.25-mile swim to reach shore.

“Just completed a successful swim off Alcatraz with the most amazing Navy SEALs and combat veterans. What a fun (and chill) way to honor those who risk their lives for our great country! God Bless our troops!” she posted.

Gaines then Keith OlbermannShe plans to attempt the feat together next time with her boyfriend, with whom she has previously had social media spat, “but I’m not sure if the public will want to see him in a Speedo.”

The prison opened in 1934 but lasted less than 30 years.

Although Alcatraz was classified as virtually impossible to escape from, given its distance to the coast, there were 14 recorded escape attempts.

However, the most infamous escape from Alcatraz was by John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris on June 11, 1962, which was made into the Hollywood film Escape from Alcatraz.

It is believed to have been the most successful attempt, although it remains a mystery whether the three made it to shore and survived, although the FBI concluded that the escapees drowned in the extreme conditions.

The three prisoners carved an escape route from their cell and built a makeshift papier-mâché head.

The final escape attempt from the prison, which took place about six months later, formed the basis for what is now the swim course of the “Escape from Alcatraz” triathlon.
