The incident is sure to inflame those who have criticized the Nike-designed, Fanatics-manufactured uniforms that made headlines during spring training for the wrong reasons.

MLB officials are working to reduce complaints, and Commissioner Rob Manfred said he expects them to go away.

“In baseball, with any new initiative, there’s going to be some negative feedback,” Manfred said in February, according to the Associated Press. “First and foremost, these are Nike jerseys. So we entered into this partnership with Nike because of who Nike is and what products they use. Everything they’ve done for us so far has been completely, 100% successful across the board.

“Jerseys are different. They’re designed as performance wear, as opposed to traditional wear. So they’ll be different, but they’ve been tested more extensively than any jersey in any sport.”
