Riley Moore tromps opponents in heated West Virginia Republican House primary

West Virginia Treasurer Riley Moore easily won a hotly contested Republican primary in his home state and will likely head to Congress after the November general election.

At the time the race was called by The Associated Press, Moore led the closest of his four opponents by more than 25 points.

Former Air Force Brigadier General. General Chris “Mookie” Walker, who was considered Moore’s most competitive challenger, followed in a surprising third place. Both sides spent about the same amount of money on the race.

The primary race turned into a controversial and competitive battle between Moore’s and Walker’s camps. Moore’s victory is likely to make him the next congressman to represent the state’s 2nd Congressional District, given that election analysts rate the race as a “solid” or “safe” Republican. It means that.

Mr. Moore comes from a family with a tradition of public office, including his grandfather, who served as governor of West Virginia, and his aunt, Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito.

He was first elected to the West Virginia State House of Delegates in November 2016 and was subsequently elected state Treasurer in the 2020 election.

Moore spent much of his tenure as a staunch opponent of “woke” environmental, social and governance (ESG) investment standards. Critics say ESG investment standards allocate investment funds based on political issues such as climate action. And he ran as a supporter of America First policies.

He has also been an early supporter of former President Trump’s current bid for the White House, endorsing former President Trump in February 2023.

Moore will face Democratic candidate and Navy veteran Steven Wendelin in November.
