Ringo Starr has eaten the same two-ingredient sandwich for decades.

The beloved sandwich of Ringo Starr, the iconic drummer from the Beatles, is surprisingly straightforward: cheese on bread. But not just any cheese.

During a 2021 segment on “The Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert asked Starr about his favorite sandwich.

“I don’t eat a lot of sandwiches these days, but cheese,” Starr replied. Then he added, “But it has to be goat cheese now.”

When Colbert probed further on why goat cheese, Starr explained, “I don’t eat anything from the cow because the molecules are so big. Have you seen a cow? The molecules are so large. That’s why if you drink milk, you feel full. With a goat, it’s a better size for our bodies.”

While Starr’s notions about animal size and “molecules” don’t have scientific backing, it is true that goat milk and cow milk differ structurally.

Studies indicate that goat milk contains a greater proportion of smaller fat globules and has a different composition of fat and protein compared to cow milk.

These variations, as well as how proteins form curds during digestion, might influence how each type of milk is processed in our bodies.

Goat cheese is often described as having a unique tangy and earthy taste, making it a popular choice paired with fruits, honey, or salty ingredients like prosciutto.

A content creator named @domenicskitchen showcased Starr’s go-to sandwich in an Instagram video series that recreates the favorite sandwiches of musicians.

For his take on Starr’s simple sandwich, he toasted bread in butter, then added soft goat cheese and grated goat cheddar.

“This sounds incredible,” one user commented. “Imagine adding some salt and pepper, tomatoes, and thin slices of shallot.”

“This looks awesome,” remarked another user.

One commenter expressed surprise that Starr didn’t make a traditional grilled cheese with the cheese melted inside.

Yet, some weren’t surprised that the famously unconventional 86-year-old Beatle would prefer his sandwich prepared differently. “I’m curious if Ringo will ever do anything ‘normal’ in his life,” mused one Instagram user.

Others questioned his claims about molecules, while one pointed out that “goat milk fat molecules are indeed smaller and easier to digest than cow’s milk.”

Other celebrity sandwiches recreated by @domenicskitchen include rock legend Little Richard’s—made with peanut butter, banana, and honey on butter-fried white bread—and country star Alan Jackson’s—pineapple with mayonnaise on white bread.

Dolly Parton’s choice, pimento cheese on white bread, was also featured.
