Ringo Starr, at 84, has recently shared that he asked for changes in the script of the forthcoming Beatles biopic directed by Sam Mendes.
Spending two days discussing the film, he provided Mendes with a “large note,” as reported by the New York Times. The movie is set to be released on July 2nd.
Starr expressed concerns particularly regarding how his relationship with his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigret, is portrayed in the film.
He noted, “He had a writer—someone with a solid reputation—and the script was well done, but it didn’t reflect Maureen and me. That’s not how we were.” There seems to be some disagreement on this point, as others involved suggest that they won’t change it.
Starr and Tigret tied the knot in 1965 amidst the peak of Beatlemania, and they had three children, including drummer Zak Starkey, before their divorce in 1975.
While Starr is mostly satisfied with how his family dynamics are showcased, he still has questions about various aspects of the film, including its projected April 2028 release.
“He’ll do what he does,” Starr added, wishing Mendes “peace and love.”
Mendes previously unveiled the casting for the biopic called “The Beatles – Four Film Film Event” during a presentation this year. Actors include Barry Keogan as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
“We aren’t just making one film about the Beatles; we’re creating four,” Mendes said at Cinemacon 2025. He believes this format offers a deeper exploration of the band.
“There has to be a way to tell epic stories for a new generation,” Mendes clarified. “I think we’ve found a unique approach.” All four biographies will be released simultaneously, termed by Mendes as “the first bold theatrical experience.”
The writers working on the four films include Jez Butterworth, Peter Strafan, and Jack Thorne.
Starr has expressed excitement about seeing a film featuring himself and his legendary former bandmates.
Keogan, in preparation for portraying Starr, mentioned he is taking drum lessons and aims to bring emotional depth to the role, rather than just mimicry. He recounted a memorable visit with Starr, where he played drums for him, even though he didn’t play in front of the legendary musician during that meet-up.
Keogan reiterated, “My job is to observe and study him a bit. I want to humanize him.” There’s a lot to interpret and convey about their lives as young men, he added. “The Beatles will be a part of this journey.”
As Keogan gears up for this significant role, it seems both Starr and the cast are embracing the opportunity to bring these iconic stories to life.
