XRP Release and Market Trends
Ripple is gearing up to release approximately $1.5 billion worth of XRP next week, as interest from investors appears to be on the rise.
The release, set for October 1, will unlock 1 billion XRP from Ripple’s escrow accounts, part of a supply management program that’s been in place for some time. This is part of the company’s strategy established back in 2017, which involved locking 55 billion XRP into specific escrow contracts to create predictable token distributions.
According to data from the XRP Ledger, around 31.98 billion XRP is still locked away. Come October 1, up to 1 billion XRP will be released, valued at roughly $1.54 billion based on the asset’s current price.
While such a release tends to grab attention due to the large amount, Ripple has a history of putting a significant portion of unlocked XRP back into escrow contracts. Thus, the actual increase in circulating supply often ends up being less than the initially announced figure of 1 billion XRP.
This event is still closely monitored because any rise in circulating supply might trigger short-term selling pressure, especially if demand isn’t strong enough to soak up the additional tokens. On the flip side, if the market reaction is muted, it could suggest that investors have already factored in the upcoming release.
XRP Whale Accumulation Trends
The upcoming unlock coincides with a trend of large investors ramping up their XRP acquisitions. Data shared by crypto analyst Ali Martinez indicates that whales have accrued over 470 million XRP in just five days, which amounts to about $724 million at the current market pricing.
Martinez references Santiment’s data, which shows that whale holdings increased from approximately 12.37 billion XRP on September 21 to around 12.80 billion by September 24. This suggests that significant holders are preparing for potential gains, despite the impending supply release.
Moreover, Martinez observed that XRP is forming an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern on its daily trading chart, a technical sign often used to predict potential price breakouts.
Technical Analysis of XRP
Currently, XRP is priced at $1.54, which is notably above its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) of about $1.31 and its 200-day SMA of roughly $1.28. Typically, when an asset is trading above both of these moving averages, it suggests that buyers maintain control over the medium and long-term trends. The fact that the 50-day SMA is above the 200-day SMA further strengthens this bullish outlook, indicating continued upward momentum.
Additionally, XRP’s 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) is close to 64, placing the token in a neutral-to-bullish range.
