Risky Freedom and the Comfort of Quiet - Daily Devotional

Jimmy Lai, a former media mogul, has faced sentencing for subversive activities after several years in prison. In the context of China, “subversive” refers to exposing truths that don’t align with the government’s narrative. Lai made a poignant remark, suggesting that silence felt like the safer route.

His remarkable life story unfolds like this. Born into a low-income family, he ascended to become one of Hong Kong’s wealthiest individuals before the onset of a communist crackdown. He had options to escape to the West, yet he chose to remain, which now puts him at the mercy of tyrants wanting to set an example.

Robert Sirico commented that the verdict was predetermined, an elaborate production. It’s evident that China is willing to suppress even someone of significant achievements, wealth, and moral fortitude if they refuse to conform.

Stories like Lai’s should remind us to appreciate living in a society that avoids totalitarian rule. But they also urge us to safeguard our freedoms actively; they shouldn’t be taken for granted.

For instance, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Expression (FIRE) has reported that 2025 could see unprecedented attempts by U.S. universities to stifle free speech. Reportedly, there have been 273 incidents this year where students engaged in constitutionally protected speech, surpassing the previous record set in 2020 during a tumultuous time.

Interestingly, not all incidents stem from overzealous administrators enforcing rules. In some cases highlighted in the report, government officials threatened funding cuts to schools that didn’t suppress students expressing “offensive” sentiments. The underlying message was clear: it’s safer to hold back.

FIRE researchers pointed out that the repercussions extend beyond the individual incidents; such actions can create a chilling effect on dialogue across campuses and generations. They raised an essential question: is staying silent amidst college life the safest option?

A significant part of the repression seems to come from the left. In Colorado, for example, ongoing court cases have sought to intimidate outspoken individuals. In the UK, Isabel Vaughn Spruce faced repeated arrests for silently praying near abortion clinics—showing that even quietude doesn’t guarantee safety.

Nevertheless, some occurrences in the FIRE report involved left-leaning students facing suppression. After feeling marginalized for years, certain right-leaning students have responded in kind. Yet, this approach doesn’t solve the issue—censorship, even with good intentions, rarely leads to positive outcomes.

As ideological divisions grow in the West, the threats to our freedoms are likely to heighten. Sirico aptly stated that our generation faces a critical choice: defend the principles foundational to a free society or compromise them for trade-offs and diplomatic favors.

This dilemma should inform how we educate our children. What must they learn to courageously defend truth and freedom in public discourse? At a minimum, they need to grasp that taking risks is far better than opting for silence. Stories of individuals like Jimmy Lai and Jack Phillips, who stood firm despite significant costs, can be pivotal.

Freedom is under siege both here and globally. If one generation lacks the bravery to stand up for what is right, all that is good could vanish. The foundation for their courage lies in what we impart to them today.
