Police in Naples, Florida, arrested Mayor Theresa Heitmann on suspicion of drunk driving on August 28.
Police initially responded to a home in the 500 block of 16th Avenue South after a man and his wife reported that an unknown woman in a silver car had followed them to their home from 12th Avenue and 3rd Street, an area lined with popular restaurants and shops in downtown Naples.
When the couple arrived at the home, an unidentified woman “parked her vehicle on the front lawn of the residence,” police said in a press release.
After a “brief exchange” between the caller and the woman, who parked her car in the front yard of the home, the couple decided to contact police.

“I believe the mayor was drunk and literally drove his car over our mailbox,” the caller can be heard saying in the 911 call. Local news station NBC 2.
When police arrived on scene, the woman leaning against the car was identified as Mayor Heitmann, and police body camera footage obtained by NBC 2 shows Mayor Heitmann distancing herself from her title as she speaks with officers.
In the video, an officer can be heard telling Heitmann, “Mr. Mayor, can you come in for a second?”

“No, don't call me the mayor. I'm Teresa Heitmann now. Not the mayor,” she replied.
The officers believed Heitmann may have been intoxicated and asked her to submit to a field sobriety test, which she did. After completing the test, the responding officers “determined that they had probable cause to arrest Ms. Heitmann for DUI,” police said.
Authorities transported the mayor to the Naples Jail, where he agreed to submit to a breathalyzer test to measure his blood alcohol content, which police determined to be between .155 and .169, although the legal limit in Florida is .08.
