Rival ‘factions’ of ‘young people’ exchange gunfire in crowd of 1,000 gathered for Muslim celebration in Philadelphia: Police

A celebration near a Philadelphia park marking the end of Ramadan, Muslims’ daily fasting month, turned violent when members of rival “sects” began firing at each other despite the crowd. Ta.

An estimated 1,000 people gathered in and around Clara Muhammad Square in West Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon for an Eid al-Fitr event. Families pitched tents and people of all ages, including babies, enjoyed the beautiful spring day together.

Around 2:30 p.m., people attending the event suddenly started shooting at each other. Several police officers happened to be issuing parking tickets at a nearby gas station when the shooting occurred. Police estimated that 30 shots were fired, causing panic among those attending the celebration.

“Everyone was just running for their lives.” I remember a witness. “Children and people’s strollers were tipping over and everyone was screaming.”

“Everyone ran away like a herd of elephants.”

A total of four people were reportedly injured in the incident. Nashon “Tawfik” Richards, 22, was shot in the abdomen during the gunfight. His father, Corey Taylor, said Richards is stable and alert but will likely require surgery.

Two teens also suffered gunshot wounds. A teenage boy who attended the event arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand, possibly from the incident, but is in stable condition.

A 15-year-old boy who was carrying a rifle was then shot in the shoulder and leg by a police officer. It is said that two commands were ignored. To disarm him. After the officer fired his weapon, she immediately locked the boy in her patrol car and drove him to the hospital. His condition is said to be stable and his weapon has also been recovered. The officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting.

Finally, a 15-year-old girl who attempted to flee the area was accidentally hit by a police vehicle and sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg. Philadelphia Police Chief Kevin Bethel said his officers are praying for the girl’s continued healing and plan to visit with her family soon.

Thankfully, despite the number of shots fired and the ensuing chaos, no one was killed.

Police Commissioner Bethel said he was grateful there were no more casualties, but said what turned out to be a fun event attended mainly by “good people wanting to have a good time” turned into “two people fighting each other and at odds.” I’m frustrated that it’s been ruined by two factions. ”

“Once again, we had young people engaging in gunfire and it just really destroyed the sanctity of what happened,” he claimed.

Corey Taylor, the father of shooting victim Tawfik Richards, also condemned the unnecessary violence. He argued that people “need to stop hating each other because of what someone else has gained, hating each other because of women, or because of some kind of affiliation.”

“That’s stupid. And that’s nonsense.” taylor continued. “Human life is irreplaceable. Be grateful for your life and cherish it.”

Police arrested a total of five people in connection with the incident, including a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of possessing a rifle. Four other men and a woman were arrested as they attempted to flee the area. Police reportedly seized a total of four weapons.

Bethel cautioned that the details he shared at the press conference were preliminary and subject to “change.” The investigation into this incident is still ongoing.
