RNC Takes Major Step Toward Midterm Convention
The Republican National Committee (RNC) is moving forward with plans for its inaugural midterm convention. On Friday, the RNC approved modifications to party rules that empower Chairman Joe Gruters to convene a convention during midterm election years.
Generally, national political conventions are reserved for presidential election years, aiming to formally nominate a party’s presidential candidate. However, Republicans are focused on maintaining their slim Senate and House majorities in this year’s elections. In September, President Donald Trump announced plans for a convention before the midterm elections to “show the great things we’ve accomplished” since regaining the White House.
As reported by Fox News Digital, the RNC’s Rules Committee adopted the new rules during its winter meeting in Santa Barbara, California, on Thursday evening. The full committee unanimously approved these changes during a general meeting on Friday.
The memo obtained by Fox News Digital mentioned the potential for an “America First midterm convention-style rally” this fall, which aligns with President Trump’s vision to revitalize the party. Gruters referred to the convention as “Trump-a-palooza,” suggesting it could effectively highlight the president’s achievements.
Still, it’s worth noting that Trump’s approval ratings are relatively low, even as some Americans commend his economic strategies and actions on pricing issues. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin remarked, “The reason Trump has historically low approval ratings is because he took America last and sold out working families to benefit billionaires and make life unaffordable.”
Traditionally, the party in power faces significant challenges in midterm elections. Trump and other Republican leaders believe that a midterm convention might offer an effective platform to showcase the president’s record and the congressional candidates running during these elections.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Gruters emphasized that the RNC’s winter session reflects the party’s backing for Trump and their determination to win the upcoming midterm elections. The RNC is reportedly concentrating on boosting military spending, mobilizing voters, and safeguarding the electoral process this fall to maintain their majority and secure a four-year term for Trump in a Republican Congress.
Details regarding the timing and location of the midterm convention will be disclosed later, possibly by the President himself. Republican officials indicated that this convention would likely coincide with the RNC’s summer meetings, typically held in August.
Additionally, the Democratic National Committee might plan to hold an interim conference, with party leaders like Martin pushing for a convention prior to the midterm elections. Historically, the Democratic Party organized various midterm conventions back in the 1970s and 1980s.
