The Republican National Committee on Friday launched an effort in battleground states to mobilize thousands of poll watchers, poll workers and lawyers as “election integrity” monitors in November, an effort that immediately raised concerns that it could lead to harassment of election workers and undermine confidence in the vote.
The RNC says the plan will help voters have confidence in the electoral process and ensure their vote counts. But as former President Donald Trump and his allies continue to spread false claims that the 2020 election was tainted by widespread fraud, the effort also sets up a repeat of Trump’s attempt to overturn the election results, a ploy that ultimately led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump’s supporters have already suggested they may not accept the election results if he loses to President Joe Biden.
The RNC said the new effort would focus on thwarting “Democrats’ attempts to circumvent the rules.” The party plans to deploy observers to monitor every step of the election process, set up a hotline for poll watchers to report any problems they perceive, and escalate issues through legal action.
The national party has said it wants to recruit 100,000 volunteers, a number some election experts say will be difficult to reach even in a high-profile presidential election year.
