RNC rejects Democrats' criticism of Vance, UK foreign secretary's fishing trip

Vice President JD Vance Faces Criticism Over Fishing Trip

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has criticized Vice President JD Vance for fishing on a private lake with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy during his official visit to the UK. This incident seems to be part of a broader series of attacks led by Democrats regarding Vance’s leisure activities during what is, admittedly, a demanding travel schedule.

The DNC Warroom released a statement on Wednesday, humorously titled “Vacation Vance at It Again: Vance owned by Americans while fishing ‘illegally’ with the British Foreign Secretary.” It suggests that such outings are a poor use of time when pressing issues are at hand.

Vance and Lammy convened at Chevening House, the Foreign Secretary’s official residence south of London, for discussions that primarily focused on the Israeli-Hamas conflict and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Before their meeting, they went fishing, and Vance jokingly noted to reporters that his children had more success in catching fish than Lammy did.

However, as the conversation shifted, Vance remarked on serious issues like the U.S. stance on recognizing a Palestinian state, highlighting a marked difference in governmental structure compared to the UK, particularly in light of the situation in Gaza.

This fishing trip occurred just prior to a significant upcoming meeting in Alaska scheduled with President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising the stakes on all fronts.

In the DNC’s Wednesday release, spokesperson Kiersten Pels questioned whether DNC donors were comfortable with paying for fishing licenses, implying misuse of funds. Reports from UK media indicate that Lammy did not have a valid fishing license for this outing. In a statement to media, the UK Foreign Office acknowledged an administrative oversight regarding the necessity of a fishing license for diplomatic engagements at Chevening House.

Regulations in England and Wales require a rod license for fishing freshwater species for anyone over the age of 13. This has added fuel to the fire concerning Vance and Lammy’s excursion.

During his visit, Vance made a brief speech to U.S. troops at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, although some have criticized this as being an insufficient engagement given the context, speculating that he only spent about six minutes with the soldiers before retreating to a lavish £10,000-a-week Cotswolds manor.

In more recent attacks, the DNC has alleged that Vance used public resources prior to his birthday to enjoy leisure activities, further fuelling the narrative of irresponsibility in a time of crisis.

The DNC claims that Vance and Trump are out of touch with the struggles of working families, accusing them of neglecting crucial issues such as healthcare and food aid. “It’s clear where Vance’s loyalty lies, and it’s not with the American people,” they asserted.

In a somewhat related matter, potential presidential candidate Gavin Newsom commented on Vance’s family trip to Disneyland, sarcastically wishing him well, but lamenting the impact on families that are struggling. Vance replied, expressing gratitude for his family time.

Critics have continued a trend of scrutinizing Vance’s security arrangements for a family kayaking trip intended for celebrating his birthday. The U.S. Secret Service has had to coordinate with the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure safety for all involved.

Before entering politics, Vance authored “Hillbilly Elegy,” detailing his upbringing in a challenging environment. In a recent podcast interview, he emphasized the importance of “sacred time” with family, balancing his official duties with personal ones, even if it sometimes means canceling family plans in light of pressing national issues.
