This week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed criticisms regarding the removal of a rainbow LGBT crosswalk outside the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. He stated that state roads should not reflect political agendas.
The Pulse Nightclub holds a tragic history, having been the site of a mass shooting in 2016 that claimed 49 lives. The Florida Department of Transportation’s actions seem aimed at keeping the focus on road safety rather than on political issues, especially over the summer.
A memo from Transport Secretary Sean Duffy in July called for states participating in road safety initiatives to focus on maintaining clear intersections and minimizing distractions.
“The Safe Roads National Initiative will emphasize non-freeway routes, ensuring consistent traffic control measures, including crosswalks that are distraction-free,” Duffy’s letter stated.
However, this decision has drawn ire from the left, with state Senator Carlos G. Smith accusing the Department of Transportation of vandalism.
He expressed disbelief that DeSantis’s administration could commit such actions against the city of Orlando, which has endured significant loss from this tragedy. Smith emphasized that the removal insults the families and survivors involved.
In response, DeSantis affirmed, “We do not allow state roads to be manipulated for political purposes.”
Orlando’s Mayor Buddy Dyer also voiced his disappointment, stating that the rainbow crosswalk improved both safety and visibility.
Duffy reiterated that roads should prioritize safety over political statements, urging governors nationwide to maintain clear and distraction-free routes. He highlighted the ongoing dangers faced by Americans on the roads and promised support to communities aiming for safer navigation.
