John Owen Lowe and Rob Lowe have a very playful father-son relationship.
John Owen told Fox News Digital that although his father sometimes gets on his nerves, his personal and professional relationship with his father has grown stronger since working together on the TV series.
“Professionally, I would say we found a way to work well together, we found a way to control each other’s behavior on set, which was something we’d never done before,” John Owen said.

“So I think it’s been less frustrating in that respect,” he continued. “I don’t want to speak for my dad, but for me, I think that with the professional respect that we have for each other, there has been some personal respect. Just a little bit, just a little bit, but I really enjoy working with my dad. He’s a total jerk, in the best sense of the word.”

“I think he’ll be happy when I say that, he’ll know what I mean and take it as a compliment. He’s not a fool, but he’s a fool,” John Owen added.
“I think he’ll be happy when I say that. He’ll take it as a compliment because he understands what I’m saying. He’s not stupid, but he is a fool.”
John Owen has grown to “respect” his dad even more after working with him on the drama series for over a year, but the Brat Pack star still knows how to win his 29-year-old dad’s heart.

John Owen said it was a universal experience for children to “go crazy” when with their parents, and he was no exception.

“Who doesn’t drive you crazy working with a parent? It’s like that. I think we can all relate to that in some way, and my dad drives me crazy,” John Owen said. “He’s really annoying. Yeah, I get that. He’s a guy that a lot of people love. As a father, he has unconditional love, but I wouldn’t say he loves me.”
John Owen continued, “This is the worst way I can put it, but he’s just annoying. Really annoying. He comments on my hair, my clothes, how puffy my eyes are, why I wake up with bags under my eyes, wants to know why I was up late, what I’ve been up to. He’s nosy, wants to know about my personal life, who I’m dating, etc. It’s annoying.”

In the second season, John Owen’s character says, “I’m not going to have my own identity, and 30 years from now, if I win a Nobel Peace Prize, someone in the audience is going to say, ‘That guy had his dad help him.'”
John Owen told Fox News Digital that he really identifies with his on-screen character in that respect.
“I also realize that although they can open doors for me, I am the one who walks through them.”
“That’s probably my favorite line from the entire show, because it’s something I’ve wrestled with in my mind my whole life,” John Owen began. “And I’m wrestling with that on ‘Unstable.’ You know, I co-created it, I executive produced it, I wrote it, I starred in it, and I still have this fear that without Rob I wouldn’t be there. And that’s technically true.”
He continued, “But I also know that sometimes doors are opened for me and I have to walk through them. A lot of the time, my insecurities win. It was very cathartic to say that on screen and very empowering because I’ve never said anything like that out loud in real life.”

“I have good relationships with my family and friends and I can vent my frustrations to them and I also think it’s good to surround yourself with people you can trust, both professionally and personally,” John Owen began. “I have a team that can tell me if something is to be praised or not, so it helps to stabilize my perspective and I know how to keep a healthy head and not get upset by the comments.”

“Rob Lowe loves being Rob Lowe, that’s true. I think he would say that because he loves it. I think it’s because he had a good perspective on it. He didn’t take it too seriously. I think because of him and my mom, I’m very aware of the by-product of success in the entertainment industry, the fame and stuff, which is weird,” he said.
“Honestly, it’s weird growing up with famous parents. It’s weird that as a kid you go to dinner parties and people come up and want pictures and autographs and then as you grow up people start taking an interest in you as a by-product,” John Owen continued. “It’s weird sometimes but you learn to deal with it and it’s not that serious. It’s not that serious.”

A key element of John Owen’s childhood was that his father was known as “Idol”, and according to the rising star, being given the nickname by Rob was “what got me up in the morning”.

“My dad thinks about how to make himself more dreamy before he goes to sleep,” jokes John Owen, “and as his son, it’s a little annoying sometimes when you’re in middle school and high school and people want to talk about their handsome dad and all the shirtless scenes. They’ve seen him. It’s never fun, but I know he likes it.”
The second season of “Unstable” is currently streaming on Netflix.
