Rob Manfred suggests a possible change in MLB's geographic structure and what might lead to it

Potential MLB Division Restructuring on the Horizon

Rob Manfred, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, has suggested that a geographical restructuring of the league’s divisions might be in the works.

During an appearance on ESPN’s broadcast of the Little League Classic, featuring the Mets and Mariners, Manfred discussed the possibility of reorganizing divisions to become more geographically oriented. However, there’s a notable limitation to this idea.

“I think expanding will provide an opportunity to reorganize geographically,” Manfred remarked. He added, “This change could lessen travel wear and tear, and I believe it could make our postseason format even more attractive to networks like ESPN.”

It’s worth noting that MLB hasn’t seen any expansion since the Diamondbacks and Rays joined back in 1998. Although rumors suggest that expansion is on the table, particularly as the Diamondbacks and Rays navigate their respective stadium situations, nothing is set in stone.

Nashville is among several cities being considered for new MLB franchises, as reported by various sources.

“I think owners recognize that there’s a demand for Major League Baseball in many vibrant cities, and we have a real opportunity to act on that expansion process,” Manfred mentioned.

He has previously expressed his desire to see two additional teams in the league before his planned resignation in 2029.

The potential for reorganization could signal the end of the traditional American and National League format, aligning baseball more closely with how divisions are structured in leagues like the NBA and NHL.

Such a change would represent one of the most significant shifts in the sport. In recent years, Manfred has actively sought to modify game rules, schedules, and postseason formats to generate more excitement and engagement with fans.
