Rob Reiner's son, aged 32, taken into custody after the director and his wife Michele are discovered fatally stabbed.

Tragic Incident Involving Rob Reiner’s Family

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle, was arrested late Sunday and charged with murder after the couple’s bodies were found at their Brentwood residence.

The discovery was reportedly made by their daughter, 28-year-old Romy.

Los Angeles police confirmed that Rob, 78, and Michelle, 68, were both stabbed to death on Sunday afternoon.

Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the situation as profoundly tragic during a news conference, emphasizing that detectives were quick to apprehend the suspect.

Nick was taken into custody early Monday morning and is facing serious charges. He is currently being held on a $4 million bail.

In a 2016 interview, Nick discussed his lengthy struggle with drug addiction, mentioning that it led to homelessness. He shared that his experiences inspired the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” which he co-wrote with his father.

Sources indicate that his battles included heroin addiction. Although he achieved sobriety in 2015, he continued to face mental health challenges. He had noted, at that time, that he was working on rebuilding his relationship with his parents.

Emergency responders arrived at their upscale Brentwood home around 3:30 PM on Sunday, where they found the victims with multiple stab wounds; reports indicated injuries to Rob’s throat.

Rob Reiner is well-known for directing iconic films like “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Stand by Me,” and “This Is Spinal Tap.” He first gained fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivich on the sitcom “All in the Family.” He and Michelle were married in 1989, and they had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy, in addition to Rob’s adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage.

Michelle Reiner was a photographer and producer who maintained a low profile despite her Hollywood connections. She is recognized for her work on the cover portrait of the 1987 book featuring President Donald Trump. Additionally, she contributed to films, including Rob’s 1990 thriller.

The couple’s romance began while filming “When Harry Met Sally…,” a relationship that notably inspired Rob to change the film’s original ending from pessimistic to optimistic. Initially, it featured Harry and Sally breaking up after years of friendship, but after falling in love with Michelle, Rob rewrote it to reflect hope in love, culminating in Harry’s passionate New Year’s Eve confession to Sally. They married in the same year the film was released.

The investigation is ongoing, as authorities await autopsy results and further evidence.
