The National Corporation of Broadcasters revoked the award following comments made by actor Robert De Niro against former President Donald Trump last week outside the New York City courthouse where Trump’s Stormy Daniels trial is taking place. The Hill reported..
De Niro slammed Trump at a press conference held on behalf of President Joe Biden’s campaign, saying, “Trump wants to destroy not only the city, but the country, and ultimately potentially the world.”
“Mr De Niro will not be attending the event.”
The left-wing actor also said, “If Trump returns to the White House, it’s goodbye to all these freedoms that we take for granted. What about the election? Forget it. It’s over. It’s over. If he becomes president, I can tell you right now, he will never go away. He will never go away. You know that. He will never go away.”
After Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts on Thursday, De Niro said “justice has been served.” Deadline reported.
According to The Hill, the NAB was scheduled to present De Niro with its American Service Award on Tuesday in Washington, DC.
“This event is proudly bipartisan, bringing together people from all political walks of life to celebrate the impactful work of our local broadcasters and partners,” a NAB spokesperson said in a statement to the outlet. “While we strongly support the right of all Americans to exercise free speech and participate in civic affairs, it is clear that Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities are a distraction from the philanthropic work we hoped to honor. To maintain the focus on the service of our honorees, Mr. De Niro will no longer be attending the event.”
Following NAB’s announcement, De Niro told The Hill, “I support the work of the NAB Leadership Foundation and want to express my gratitude for all they have done and continue to do for all of us. I wish them the best of luck in continuing their good work.”

De Niro had to deal with a throng of Trump supporters who relentlessly heckled him before and after the press conference, and it was during the altercation that De Niro’s tough-guy on-screen persona came through.
In fact, as De Niro was returning to his car after the press conference, detractors surrounded him and a group of men who were apparently guarding him, and a violent altercation ensued.
Trump supporters shouted “Impostor!” “Traitor!” “Nobody!” “What a terrible movie!” and “Brat!” NBC News reported..
“We’re not trying to intimidate you!” De Niro yelled back, pointing his index finger at him. “Trying to intimidate you is what Trump does! … We will fight back! We, the Democrats, are trying to be the gentlemen of the world! You are a gangster! You are a gangster!”
“You’re out of luck!” another person shouted at the actor, at which point the actor clearly lost it and shouted a good-natured “Fuck you!” at his opponent.
