During a recent ceremony at D23, Robert Downey Jr. succinctly captured the essence of Disney’s legacy with four words as former Disney CEO Bob Iger was honored. “Fortune favors the brave,” said Downey when Iger was named a Disney Legend.
“These four words perfectly encapsulate Mr. Iger’s defining trait: courage,” Downey continued. “It’s about making bold decisions despite significant risks, trusting your gut, and inspiring others to challenge themselves.”
This acknowledgment of Iger’s contributions comes as he transitions from his longtime role at Disney. Earlier this year, he stepped down as CEO to embark on new ventures, including joining Josh Kushner in an acquisition of the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to reports, even though Iger’s era at Disney has officially concluded, Downey believes he is merely starting a new chapter. “It seems like he’s just getting started,” he remarked. “That’s what makes you a true legend in every sense, Bob.”
Iger was honored alongside the Class of 2026, which also includes talents like Anne Hathaway and Lin-Manuel Miranda. His successor, Josh D’Amaro, introduced him at the event, joined by other notable figures like Harrison Ford, Ellen Pompeo, and Diane Sawyer, who shared their thoughts on Iger’s substantial impact on the entertainment company.
D’Amaro praised Iger for more than just his achievements, stating, “What I’ve admired most about Bob isn’t just his successes but his character.” Iger reciprocated, expressing his pride in D’Amaro as his successor.
In his acceptance speech, Iger pointed out the importance of the creators behind Disney’s triumphs. “I’m not lost. I’m the executive in this room,” he stated. “Executives generally manage finances and logistics. But above all, we are here to support the creators—the true talent that propels this company.”
Iger’s connection with Disney started over fifty years ago when he joined ABC as a studio supervisor in 1974. He climbed the ranks, ultimately becoming CEO of Disney after the acquisition of ABC and its parent company in 1996.
His initial tenure as CEO marked a transformative period for the company, highlighted by major acquisitions like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. Although he stepped down in 2021—after extending his term during the pandemic—he returned in 2022 after the departure of his successor, Bob Chapek.
Iger’s second resignation took place early in 2026, passing the leadership to D’Amaro, who will continue to serve as a senior advisor and Disney board member until the year’s end.
