Robert Griffin III Reflects on His Career and the Washington Commanders
At one point, Robert Griffin III was viewed as the future of the Washington Redskins. Fresh off his Heisman Trophy win at Baylor, he was the second overall draft pick, right behind Andrew Luck, and he had an impressive Rookie of the Year season.
Yet, everything changed after he tore his ACL during a playoff game. After that, he started just 20 more games in Washington before moving to the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens, eventually retiring after the 2020 season.
Griffin seems eager to reshape how he views his time in Washington, especially with new ownership and changes within the organization, including two name changes. Nevertheless, he reflects fondly on his experience there: “No matter what happened, the Washington football team changed my life forever,” he shared in a recent interview. “I love the fans; they have shown me so much support.” He mentioned he would always cheer for the Commanders and their quarterback prospect, Jaden Daniels.
The bond Griffin has with his fans remains strong, and he recently worked with the community, collaborating with USAA on an initiative aimed at uplifting military families—a cause close to his heart, given that his parents served in the military. He emphasized the sacrifices that these families make: “These are people who put the lives of others before their own.”
Reflecting on his personal history, he noted the importance of never forgetting his roots as the son of military veterans who dedicated many years to serving the country.
In the realm of Washington football, Griffin, along with Daniels and Mike Thomas, stands out as one of the few players to have been named Rookie of the Year. Now, he’s excited to support Daniels, recognizing the opportunity that lies ahead for the team.
“We need to celebrate this young man; he’s on the verge of something significant for the franchise,” Griffin commented. “He could very well be the first franchise quarterback since Joe Theismann.” Griffin believes Daniels has a unique talent and deserves unconditional support through his journey.
