Robert Irwin Reflects on Winning ‘Dancing with the Stars’

Robert Irwin, the Australian wildlife conservationist, has expressed his appreciation for the support he received from America during his time on “Dancing with the Stars.” In a recent interview, the 22-year-old, who won Season 34 of the show alongside partner Witney Carson, shared his thoughts on the experience and the warmth he felt from the audience.

“Coming from Australia, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I honestly didn’t think I’d get this far, not knowing how supportive everyone here would be,” he said. “It’s hard to describe how much this has meant to me—what I’m representing is more than just dancing.”

He continued, “When I enter the ballroom, I carry the legacy of my father. It’s not just about me as a wildlife conservationist; I aspire to spread positivity and be a role model for young people.” The ongoing support from America, he noted, reassured him that his cause is resonating, which is something he finds incredible. “I’m really thankful. All those hours in rehearsal paid off when I saw that the dances resonated with the viewers,” he added, reflecting on the vulnerability of sharing oneself on such a public platform.

Irwin mentioned that this journey was emotional. “Opening up like that to America was nerve-wracking, but it felt beautiful because I feel like I’ve gained a whole new family here.” He acknowledged the significant challenge, both physically and mentally, that dancing poses. “I thought I was ready and in good shape, but nothing could have prepared me for this,” he admitted. “Dancing requires a different kind of strength. It doesn’t matter what your background is—nothing can quite prepare you for this level of performance.”

He noted, “I’m using muscles I didn’t know existed.” Feeling the pressure alongside his partner, he mentioned, “I wanted to push myself because I respect everything this art involves. My admiration for dance has only grown through this process.” In the end, he described his determination, saying, “You have to go all out to do justice to the performance, and that’s where the reward lies.”

Recently, Irwin celebrated his 22nd birthday just two days after his win. He shared a nostalgic photo on Instagram, juxtaposing his own Mirrorball Trophy with his sister Bindi’s from her victory in an earlier season. “Ten years later. Thank you, @bindisueirwin, for inspiring me to take this leap—I love you,” he captioned the post.
