Robert MacIntyre’s interesting choice to skip Memorial Tournament, see family

Robert McIntyre won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory, a win that qualified him for this week’s Memorial Tournament, the Travelers Championship and, of course, the U.S. Open.

However, the 27-year-old won’t be in Dublin, Ohio, and will instead be heading home to Scotland to be with his family — a decision that appears to have been made at the last minute, especially as the Scottish golfer wasn’t sure if he would play in the tournament.

“Well, I haven’t told my mom, my family, my team, my manager yet,” McIntyre said Sunday night. “I guess I need to talk about it (laughs). I want to go home and party, but I think I’ll probably fight next week.”

A little over 12 hours later, his decision was made, with PGA Tour Communications announcing the official announcement. Announced On Monday, Davis Thompson was set to take his place at the Memorial Tournament.

Many players would have jumped at the chance to play in the Memorial, especially with it now being a signature event, but McIntyre opted to return home to Scotland instead.

His decision isn’t a surprise, as he has spoken on multiple occasions about feeling homesick and the win means McIntyre can take a week off.

“This is my fifth consecutive tournament. I was supposed to play 36 holes of U.S. Open qualifying tomorrow with my dad as my caddie,” he said after his win. “Thank goodness that’s not going to happen.”

His next event is likely to be the U.S. Open, which will be held June 13-16 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
