Remembering Robert Redford: A Hollywood Legend

Robert Redford navigated the competitive landscapes of Hollywood, often finding himself in the spotlight of some of its most iconic female stars, like Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand. Even Meryl Streep expressed her admiration, mentioning she had a significant crush on Redford while working together on “Out of Africa.”

The screen legend, who passed away at 89 in his Utah home, had a unique charm. It seemed everyone, including Demi Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer, fell for him at one point or another.

Streisand was particularly determined to have Redford as her co-star in the classic 1973 film “The Way We Were.” According to writer Robert Hoffler, she described herself as “crazy” about him. It seems that even back then, Redford was quite protective of his personal life, possibly to avoid the gossip that often swirled around two actors rumored to have a romantic relationship.

In fact, Redford’s approach to filming intimate scenes was particularly careful; he insisted that the stars wear bikinis to keep the imagery more modest. During one notable scene, he even chose not to deliver a line about it improving next time, emphasizing a desire for authenticity over bravado.

While some insiders speculate about a possible off-screen romance between Streisand and Redford, she has remained mum on the topic. Reflecting on their time together, Streisand shared that each day on set was filled with intensity and joy, noting their contrasting backgrounds—her allergy to horses versus his love for them—as a point of connection.

Fonda, who worked with Redford on five films, revealed her deep feelings for him, saying his passing hit her hard. They played a young couple in “Barefoot in the Park,” and Fonda has always described their chemistry as magnetic yet complex—she once noted that he didn’t even really enjoy kissing on screen, leading to some speculation about his comfort with intimacy.

Interestingly, during a 2015 interview, Fonda publicly admitted her feelings, only for Redford to express surprise, stating he never realized she felt that way. It’s a testament to the unique dynamic they shared, both professionally and personally.

Redford’s allure didn’t stop with Fonda; Streep had her own experiences. She recalled an especially tender scene from “Out of Africa,” where he recited poetry while washing her hair by the river. The blend of intimacy and vulnerability made quite an impression on her, leading to fond memories despite the occasional challenges of filming.

Reflecting on their collaborations, Streep noted Redford’s remarkable ability to listen and connect, a quality that she felt was rare in men. Their partnership continued years later when they worked together again in the 2007 film “Lions for Lambs.”

He experienced love and loss in his personal life as well. Redford was married to historian Laura Van Weigenen for nearly three decades and raised four children with her before later remarrying in 2009. His legacy continues with the memories cherished by those who knew him.
