Robert Saleh attempted to clarify his earlier remarks about the Jaguars, where he indicated they were “almost elite” at “stealing” signals from other teams. During a media session on Tuesday, he mentioned he was actually giving Jacksonville a “compliment.”
This remark sparked a brief and tense discussion between Saleh and Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen following Jacksonville’s win over the 49ers last Sunday.
The former Jets head coach sought to ease any tension when he spoke with reporters this week.
“As a coach, I know the time I have to spend watching tapes, building formations, and defining as little metrics as possible to give players the best chance to succeed,” Saleh explained.
“It’s tiring work, and every team engages in it. I meant to acknowledge that some are just better at it than others, and, honestly, these guys are really impressive,” he continued. “And, like I said, I won’t change that on Sunday. Liam is doing an incredible job.”
He added, “The team really reflects his character, and I hope they come out of the game healthy. I wish him all the best for the rest of the season. I hope I’ve chosen my words more carefully, but my intention has always been to support the staff in that aspect of football.”
Saleh also shared that he hadn’t reached out to Cohen personally, emphasizing that everything was “all good.” His earlier comments about the Jaguars hinted that they had a “very advanced signal-stealing type system,” but he assured that Jacksonville wasn’t perceived as breaking any rules.
