Robin Wright describes leaving the US as 'freeing': 'America is a mess'

Robin Wright Embraces Life in England

Robin Wright doesn’t hold any regrets about saying goodbye to the U.S.

The acclaimed actress, at 59, recently announced her move to England.

“It’s liberating,” she mentioned in an interview with The Times, adding that in search of fulfillment, you often end up with only about 60% of what you really wanted.

The Texas-born, California-raised star shared that she’s currently renting a home along the beach in the UK with her boyfriend, architect Henry Smith.

“I adore being in this country,” she expressed. “There’s a sense of self-liberation here. People are genuinely kind. They’re engaged with life, unlike the rush and competition that often defines America.”

Wright noted that the fast-paced California lifestyle was a factor in her decision to relocate.

“Everyone seems to be building these enormous houses, but I’ve done all that. I appreciate the quiet types, and I feel like I’ve finally found my people,” she said.

She reminisced about how she first met Smith, recalling a moment in a pub when she asked a man if he could feed his dog. “He was confused, thinking it was his dog,” she laughed. “Then, Henry, who’s quite tall, set down his drink and came over. He asked, ‘Who is F-K?’ and I replied, ‘Who are you?’ And that was the start.”

“He’s just a genuine guy—a real adult,” she added, reflecting on her relationship.

“It’s exactly what I wanted,” she continued. “At 60, you start to ponder, ‘Is this it?’ I’ve enjoyed solitude many times before.”

Wright, known for her role in “The Princess Bride,” was previously married to Sean Penn from 1996 to 2010, with whom she shares two children: 34-year-old daughter Dylan and 32-year-old son Hopper.

In the interview, she also revealed her regrets around co-parenting with Penn. “It was tough for them,” she admitted, reflecting on her feelings over the years.

She acknowledged that while the 65-year-old Penn had demanding work commitments, he often wasn’t present due to his acting career.

“He was gone a lot,” she shared. “He returned at times, but it felt like I was left dealing with the aftermath.”

She acknowledged that their parenting styles were quite different, saying, “We were both extremes. The kids didn’t quite see that in-between.”

After her divorce from Penn, Wright married Clement Giraudet in 2018 but filed for divorce in 2022. She had a brief marriage to actor Dane Witherspoon from 1986 to 1988.
