Robin Wright found herself in a bit of a mix-up regarding Derek and Julianne Hough and their familial relationship. During an awkward moment on the red carpet at the 2026 Golden Globes, she mistakenly thought Derek, 40, was Julianne’s husband.
“Wait, are you Julian’s brother? I love her,” the 59-year-old actress told Derek. She also shared, “Can I tell you something? The first time I saw her dance, I thought, ‘They’re married.'”
“That happens sometimes,” Derek acknowledged, trying to ease the confusion.
Wright went on to praise the sibling duo and their dance performances. “You guys are great together. I follow you on Instagram and love what you do,” she expressed.
The conversation then shifted as Derek thanked her and mentioned her nomination for a Golden Globe for her role in the Prime Video limited series “Girlfriend.”
Derek and Julianne are the youngest of five siblings from a Mormon family in Utah, and they both gained fame on “Dancing with the Stars.” Derek currently judges the show alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, while Julianne co-hosts with Alfonso Ribeiro.
In September 2025, Julianne shared some insight about a past collaboration on the DWTS live tour, which caused some tension. “Carrie Ann did all the choreography and made us dance the rumba together. It’s a dance of love, right?” she recalled on her podcast, “Office Chick.”
“Our names on the program were ‘Derek and Julianne Hough,’ so everyone assumed we were married,” she continued. “And when they found out we were siblings, I remember one venue shouting, ‘That’s not true!'”
Julianne was married to former NHL player Brooks Laich from 2017 to 2020 and previously dated Ryan Seacrest for three years before they split in 2013.
Derek tied the knot with fellow dancer Hayley Erbert in 2023, and just last month, they welcomed their first child, daughter Everly. Julianne congratulated them on social media, saying, “Welcome to the world, sweet angel Everly 💗.”
