Beware of Robobop
Recently, some unsettling footage surfaced showing a robot accidentally hitting a child in the face during a dance routine.
This incident reportedly took place in Shaanxi province, China, on March 21st, during a performance where the humanoid robot was showcasing its dance skills.
The video starts off relatively harmless, featuring the robot twirling and kicking in a controlled area, while the audience looks on, mesmerized.
However, things quickly change when the robot spins towards the crowd, unintentionally giving a boy a punch to the face.
Afterward, its handler pulls the malfunctioning machine away, but oddly enough, the robot keeps moving as if still dancing in the center of the ring.
Online reactions were mixed, with one viewer exclaiming, “What a dangerous performance.”
“The kid knew it was coming, but there was no escape,” noted another child, while someone else added, “That metal really can hurt.”
One critic quipped, “A humanoid robot casually punching a child… we clearly have miles to go before these are safe for everyday use.”
Some users made light of the situation, humorously suggesting this could be the start of a robot uprising. “Robot revolts often begin small… just a slap, then a kick. All part of desensitizing us,” remarked another user.
This particular robot appears to be a G1 model, created by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese tech firm that designed it for research, education, and commercial applications.
Retailing at about $13,500, this 77-pound robot boasts advanced locomotion abilities, state-of-the-art sensors, and can perform a range of movements, including dancing and object manipulation.
However, instances of robotic misbehavior raise concerns about the need for stricter safety measures before these machines hit the market.
Earlier this year, a malfunction involving another Unitree robot had it unintentionally kicking its human handler in the groin while attempting to imitate movements.
Additionally, a recent incident involved another prototype being “detained” by Macau authorities after frightening an elderly woman to the point of hospitalization.
In the latter case, the robot was seen raising its arms while being scolded by a supervisor, who angrily remarked in Cantonese, “You’re making my heart race! What’s the point of being reckless when there’s so much at stake? Are you out of your mind?”
