Lowcut Connie’s Performance Canceled Over Political Reasons
Lowcut Connie, a rock band from Philadelphia, announced that their scheduled performance at a music festival this weekend has been canceled, citing political motivations.
Adam Weiner, the band’s frontman, expressed his disappointment on social media, revealing that they were removed from the lineup for the Rocking the River Festival in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, which was set for Friday.
In his post on Facebook, he stated, “For the first time, my show was canceled for ‘political’ reasons.” He mentioned that promoters in Luzerne County felt their performance would be “controversial and polarizing.”
This annual summer concert, which is free and suitable for all ages, will now feature an AC/DC cover band in place of Lowcut Connie.
Weiner further elaborated in a video message, labeling the county’s decision as “very disappointing and upsetting.” He questioned the reasoning behind the cancellation, noting that although they were not explicitly informed, the implication was clear.
The frontman believes that diversity is a fundamental strength in America and stands firm on his terminology, saying, “People don’t like the word, but I’ll continue to use it because everyone is welcome at the Lowcut Connie show. ‘Variety’ and ‘inclusion’ shouldn’t be foul language.”
Additionally, Weiner speculated that their protest song, “Livin’ in the USA,” which addresses the anxieties felt by many in the country, might have influenced the decision.
“This is about the inhuman and un-American attacks we’re seeing,” he remarked, describing the promoters’ choice to cancel as “cowardly.”
“We could have done a beautiful show this Friday,” he reflected, noting that he also recently had to cancel an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a noted progressive.
He pointed out that artists like himself and Colbert are facing job losses due to their principles. In response, a spokesperson from Luzerne County mentioned their aim is to create a space to enjoy music and food while remaining free from politics.
Lowcut Connie had previously withdrawn from a Kennedy Center show in protest of Donald Trump’s involvement with the venue.
