The PGA Tour is hosting the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, Michigan, where Rickie Fowler will be defending his title. After three weeks of spectacular golf, the tournament won’t feature the top-ranked players, but it will feature some strong golfers looking to climb the FedExCup ladder.
The Donald Ross designed Detroit Golf Club is one of the flattest courses players will play this season, and it’s sure to be a birdie fest as scores tend to be lower.
Nate Lashley won the inaugural tournament in 2019 at 25 under par. The past few years have seen similar results. Tony Finau won at 26 under par in 2022, and Rickie Fowler ended his winless streak with a final score of 24 under par. The cut line is also low, with players typically having to finish the 36 holes at 5 under par or lower to qualify for the weekend. The past five cut lines for this tournament have been 4 under, 3 under, 3 under, 5 under and 5 under.
Get ready for a string of birdies.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Preview:
Defending champion Rickie Fowler ended a four-year winless streak last year by beating Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa in a playoff.
Since that win, however, he’s only recorded one top-20 finish, this time at last week’s Travelers Championship. He finished tied for 20th, a pretty disappointing finish considering he started the championship with a 6-under 64, much like his entire 2024 season.
Still, Fowler is aiming to become the first player in the tournament’s history to win back-to-back titles.
Also in the mix is Cameron Young, who shot a 59 last week at TPC River Highlands, placing second in 2022 behind Finau.
Michael Thorbjornsen, who made his professional debut last week with the Travelers, will play again this week in Detroit. The former Stanford Cardinal shot a 6-under 64 in the second round to finish tied for 39th.
The star of the tournament is Tom Kim, who lost in a one-hole playoff to his good friend Scottie Scheffler at Travelers. This week marks Kim’s ninth consecutive tour appearance. His game is very sharp right now, so he’s one to watch. His best finish at Rocket Mortgage is a T-7 in 2022.
The sponsor exemption list is also impressive. Myles Russell will be making his PGA TOUR debut at age 15. He won the Junior PGA Championship and the Junior Players. Russell stunned the world earlier this year when he qualified for the LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Neil Shipley is also in the field, making his first appearance outside a major, after finishing worst amateur at the Masters and U.S. Open.
The field may not feature any of the top 10 players in the world, but there is plenty of talent on the field that will make it a fascinating week.
