Australian golfer Cam Davis beat out Akshay Bhatia and a host of other players to win his second PGA Tour title at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday.
Davis took the lead with a win in his 17th start of the season. His previous best finish was 12th or worse.
He shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish at 18-under and win by one stroke over Akshay Bhatia, Davis Thompson, Ming Woo Lee and Aaron Lai.
Bhatia led or was tied for the lead through the first three days of the tournament, but had a chance to force a playoff when he three-putted on the 18th hole to lose by one stroke. It was his first three-putt of the week and cost him a playoff spot.
Last week, he lost a playoff at the Travelers Championship to Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim, after Scheffler went on to win his sixth PGA Tour title.
The 29-year-old won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021 and is the first player in the event to do so. First two wins.
Davis won $1.65 million from the $9.2 million prize pool, and the next four players took home $616,400 each.
Last year’s winner, Rickie Fowler, finished tied for 31st and earned $48,583.08. Neil Shipley, who was the last amateur to finish in the Masters and U.S. Open in his first PGA Tour appearance as a pro, earned his first top 20 and $113,068. What a strong debut for the former Ohio State Buckeye.
FSU sophomore Luke Clanton finished T10 but didn’t win any prize money because he competed as an amateur.
