Podcaster Joe Rogan was taken aback on Wednesday after a video from 2010 featuring then-President Barack Obama defending deportations and immigration enforcement gained significant traction online. This video was highlighted in a discussion Rogan had with fellow podcaster Andrew Logan, who pointed out Obama’s past immigration policies, which differ markedly from the current Democratic position.
Rogan has frequently pointed out how the Democratic narrative surrounding immigration has evolved, noting that some might mistakenly believe everything would improve once they are in power. Logan remarked that when those on the left begin to mirror the right’s positions, it creates a perception of acceptance, citing the Obama administration as an example.
During the conversation, Rogan requested that a viral clip of Obama be shared, reflecting on how he had previously misunderstood the scope of deportations during Obama’s presidency. He revealed that, contrary to his belief that most deportees were those turned away at the borders, about a third of the nearly three million deported were actually arrested and removed from the country.
In a speech from 2010, Obama addressed immigration advocates advocating for amnesty and a halt to deportations. He expressed that, while he recognized the compassion behind their arguments, a broad approach could lead to increased illegal immigration. Obama insisted that the U.S. has both the right and responsibility to regulate its borders and enforce residency laws, stating that those who violated these laws, regardless of their circumstances, should be held accountable.
Interestingly, Rogan noted how Obama’s rhetoric back in 2010 could be perceived as “very Republican,” with Logan reflecting that this kind of statement would have shocked people at the time. He also brought up a clip of Hillary Clinton from 2008, where she discussed the need for stringent immigration conditions, suggesting that if individuals were law-abiding, they could remain in the country after fulfilling certain responsibilities.
Immigration continues to be a hot topic, especially with the political shifts seen over the past decade, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency. In a earlier part of the episode, Rogan recapped a conversation with Elon Musk, who suggested that mass immigration is essentially a strategy to ensure Democrats maintain electoral dominance, particularly in crucial swing states.
