Roger Goodell addresses criticism of Bad Bunny's Super Bowl performance

NFL Commissioner Addresses Bad Bunny Controversy

The NFL commissioner has responded to the backlash regarding the choice of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show.

The announcement upset many football fans, particularly after some of Bad Bunny’s previous anti-Trump comments resurfaced online. This stirred quite a bit of anger among a segment of the audience.

Goodell assured the press that the decision was well thought out during a recent meeting. “I don’t think I’ve ever chosen an artist without some backlash or criticism. It’s challenging when you have hundreds of millions tuning in,” he noted.

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, has opted to perform in Puerto Rico, citing concerns over the deportation policies during Trump’s presidency.

Some took offense to Ocasio’s lighthearted comments in response to the controversy, suggesting that those who wish to understand his performance should learn Spanish. It seemed to add to the irritation.

Goodell remained optimistic, expressing confidence in the performance. “I’m sure it’s going to be a great show. He knows the importance of this platform, and I think it’ll be a unifying experience,” he stated.

He pointed to Bad Bunny’s immense popularity as a key reason for this decision. “He’s among the top entertainers globally, and that’s what we aim for. This is a pivotal move for us, an essential part of the entertainment value,” Goodell remarked.

Even President Trump weighed in, admitting he had never heard of Bad Bunny and questioning the choice. “I don’t know why they would do that. It’s a bit crazy,” he commented, dismissing the selection as “ridiculous.”

Goodell faced scrutiny earlier this year when he mentioned the NFL’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, even as some businesses opted out after Trump’s election.

The next Super Bowl is set to take place on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
