Roger Goodell Addresses the Tragic Shooting at NFL Headquarters

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell engaged in a heartfelt discussion regarding the unfortunate mass shooting that occurred at the league’s New York City headquarters, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals. This incident took place on Monday night.

In an appearance on NBC prior to the NFL Hall of Fame Games, which is set to kick off the 2025 season in Canton, Ohio, Goodell condemned the violence, particularly criticizing the actions of an NFL employee that left many with “severe injuries” and was deemed “meaningless.”

“There’s no justification for such senseless acts,” Goodell stated. “These events are hard to comprehend. They impact real people—friends, family, and colleagues. It’s especially challenging.” He went on to emphasize that these instances of violence are prevalent in various settings—schools, churches, and other places where they simply shouldn’t occur.

While speaking, Goodell also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from government officials, teams, and coaches during this difficult time. However, he underscored that the repercussions of such violence extend beyond the league itself—they touch the community as a whole.

“This incident is more than just an isolated attack; it’s an assault on humanity, our community, and our way of life,” he remarked. “We all need to step up, providing support to those in need while ensuring we take necessary precautions.”

Goodell attended the funeral of Didalur Islam, an NYPD officer who lost his life in the shooting. The tragic event unfolded when 27-year-old Shane Tamura opened fire in the lobby at 345 Park Avenue before taking his own life on another floor.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed that Tamura had targeted the NFL due to frustrations linked to injuries he sustained while playing football, which he believed contributed to his chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Tamura mistakenly accessed the wrong elevator bank before committing the attack.

Goodell has been in regular contact with league employees since the shooting, ensuring that everyone remains safe and stays away from the office until at least next week.

This is a challenging period for everyone affiliated with the NFL; still, Goodell believes that sports have the potential to be a source of comfort and healing. “We know that the NFL unites people, and we plan to continue that mission,” he said. “While our hearts are heavy, we’ll keep moving forward.”
